Liver cancer is a serious health condition that affects thousands of people every year. Early detection is key to improving survival rates, which is why it's important to be aware of the risk factors, symptoms, and available treatment options. At D.S. Research Centre, we are committed to helping liver cancer patients by combining modern medicine with the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda. Here's what you need to know about liver cancer and how we can help. The liver is located in the upper right part of your abdomen, beneath your diaphragm, and above your stomach. Several types of cancer can form in the liver, with the most common being hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which starts in the primary liver cell (hepatocyte). Other forms, such as intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and hepatoblastoma, are much rarer. Cancer that spreads to the liver is more common than cancer that begins in the liver cells.
Liver Cancer Symptoms Like many cancers, primary liver cancer seldom produces symptoms in its early stages. That’s why it’s often diagnosed once it has already advanced. If symptoms do occur, they might include: - Fatigue - Bloating - Pain on the right side in the upper abdomen - Nausea - Loss of appetite - Feeling full - Unexplained weight loss - Weakness - Fever - Jaundice - White, chalky stool
Risk Factors
- Cirrhosis: Scarring of healthy liver tissue, which can increase the risk of liver cancer.
- Chronic Hepatitis B and C: These infections can raise the risk of liver cancer.
- Excessive Alcohol Use: Drinking heavily for many years can lead to liver damage and cancer.
- Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Obesity, and Diabetes: These conditions are linked to fat buildup in the liver, increasing cancer risk.
- Inherited Liver Diseases: Rare genetic conditions like hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease can cause liver damage and raise cancer risk.
- Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC): This disease, which narrows the bile ducts, can increase the risk of liver and bile duct cancers.
- Choledochal Cyst: A birth defect of the bile duct that raises the risk of bile duct cancer. Prevention - Maintain a healthy weight and stay active.
- Get vaccinated for hepatitis B.
- Test for hepatitis C and seek treatment if needed.
- Avoid smoking or quit if you smoke.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
Liver cancer is treatable when it’s caught early. That’s why it’s important to be aware of the risk and recognize any symptoms that could be associated with the disease. People who have a high risk for liver cancer because of cirrhosis, should have regular screenings, to catch any signs of cancer as early as possible. Studies show if liver cancer is detected early, then curative therapies – surgical resection, transplant – allow excellent long-term survival.Liver cancer survival rates could be significantly improved if more people with cirrhosis were screened for tumours using readily available, inexpensive, and non-invasive abdominal ultrasound scans and blood tests.
