World Brain Tumor
Day is observed on 8 June every year. This day is crucial in drawing attention
to Brain tumors and emphasizing the need to increase awareness about them. The
day helps to educate public, encouraging them to seek medical attention if they
experience any persistent or unusual neurological changes.
Early
detection and timely intervention is therefore the key to save lives. But it is
also important to note that all Brain tumors are not cancerous. Brain tumor is
like an abnormal growth of cells in the Brain. It can be classified into two
types, such as benign which means the tumor is non-cancerous, they typically
grow slowly have distinct borders and rarely spread .Benign tumors can still be
dangerous, they can damage and compress
parts of brain and cause severe dysfunction. Malignant which means the tumor is
cancerous and can lead to further life-threatening complications. Brain
tumors can either originate in Brain tissue or they can spread to Brain from
other parts of the body which is also known as metastatic Brain tumor. Regardless of type, their presence can
affect Brain function because they may press on important areas controlling
movement, speech, vision, or memory. The symptoms of a Brain tumor can
vary from person to person depending on how big it is and where it is located.
Symptoms of
Brain Tumor include persistent headache, seizures, vomiting or nausea, blurred
vision or diplopia, loss of balance, weakness of limb, memory problem, trouble
speaking, mood swings etc.
While not all
Brain tumors can be prevented, certain measures can reduce the risk and promote
early detection: Regular Check-Ups, Maintaining a healthy lifestyle like
balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and avoiding smoking and
excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to overall Brain health. Being
aware of risk factors such as exposure to chemicals or Radiation can help take
preventive measures wherever possible
Brain tumor
investigations typically involve a combination of neurological exams, imaging
tests such as MRI scan and CT scan which are used to visualize the tumor and assess its location and extent.
If scans suggests tumor then Biopsy will be recommended. Early detection is
critical for improving out comes for Brain tumor patients.
As we observe
Brain Tumor Day, it’s a time for everyone to give support to those affected and
their families and to collectively work towards a future where Brain tumors are
no longer a life –limiting diagnosis.
