Nutrition is more than
just eating the food. It is about giving our body the right nutrients to live,
grow, heal and stay healthy. Every day,
the food we choose affects our energy, immunity, strength, mood and overall
well-being. This National Nutrition Month 2026, let us take a moment to
understand the real power of nutrition and how small changes in our daily diet
can make a big difference.
National Nutrition Month, also known as Rashtriya Poshan Maah, is observed every year in September in India. It aims to create awareness about good nutrition and encourage healthy food habits among the people.
Why Does
Nutrition Matter?
Our body needs a variety of nutrients to function
properly. Carbohydrates provide energy, proteins help build and repair muscles
and tissues, healthy fats support important body functions, while vitamins and
minerals help maintain immunity, bones, blood and other essential life processes.
Good nutrition is important at every stage of life.
From Childhood to Geriatric(Old) age it serves huge roles in our day to day
life.
The Power of
a Balanced Plate
One of the simplest ways to improve our health is
to eat a variety of foods. No single food can provide all the nutrients
our body needs.
A healthy plate can include vegetables, seasonal
fruits, whole grains or millets, pulses, beans, nuts and seeds, milk or
suitable alternatives, and good sources of protein such as eggs, fish, chicken
or other lean meats. Including different colours and types of foods in our meals
can naturally increase dietary diversity. Locally available and seasonal foods
can also be nutritious, affordable and easy to include in everyday meals.
Protein: A
Nutrient We Should Not Ignore
Protein is often associated with muscles and
exercise, but its role goes much higher than that. It is needed for tissue
repair, enzymes, hormones and many important functions of our body.
Simple foods such as dal, chana, rajma, soy,
paneer, curd, eggs, fish and chicken can help us meet our protein needs.
Instead of focusing only on expensive supplements, building regular meals
around good protein sources can be a practical first step.
Small
Changes in our eating habits
Good nutrition also
depends on our eating habits. Eating slowly helps us notice when we are full.
Planning meals can prevent us from choosing unhealthy snacks when we are busy.
Reading food labels can help us understand how much sugar, salt, and fat a
packaged food contains. Cooking at home also gives us more control over the
ingredients and the amount of oil or salt / sugar used.
Let
Nutrition Become a Daily Habit
This National Nutrition Month, let us move beyond
the idea that healthy eating is a short-term diet. Nutrition is a lifelong investment in our health. A healthy
meal does not have to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes, the most powerful
changes begin with something as simple as adding a vegetable, choosing a fruit
instead of a packaged snack, or remembering to include protein in our meals.
