Skin Cancer: Spot the Change, Stop the Risk

Skin cancer occurs across all races and regions globally and has been rising significantly in recent decades. While more common among individuals with lighter skin due to reduced photoprotection from melanin, it can affect anyone.

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin), caused by unrepaired DNA damage, often due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This damage leads to mutations that trigger cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.

Types of Skin Cancer

1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

  • Most common skin cancer.

  • Typically appears on sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, and neck, but can also show up on the trunk and limbs.

  • Appears as a waxy bump, pearly nodule, or pink patch.

  • Grows slowly but can cause deep tissue damage if untreated.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

  • Second most common skin cancer.

  • Occurs in both fair and darker skin tones.

  • Grows faster than BCC and can spread (metastasize).

  • Appears as a firm red bump or crusted flat lesion.

  • Early treatment helps prevent disfigurement and metastasis.

3. Melanoma

  • The most dangerous form of skin cancer.

  • Arises from melanocytes (pigment-producing cells).

  • May start in an existing mole or appear as a sudden dark spot.

  • Has a high potential to spread if not caught early.

    Causes of Skin Cancer

Over 95% of skin cancers are linked to UV radiation, primarily from sunlight and artificial sources like tanning beds. Additional risk factors include:

    • Genetics (family history of skin cancer)

    • Weakened immune system

    • Chemical exposure (e.g., arsenic, tar)

    • Smoking (especially related to SCC on the lips)

    Diagnosis and Staging

    • Visual examination followed by a biopsy.

    • Imaging tests like MRI or CT scans may be required for staging in advanced cases.

    • Regular skin self-checks and dermatology visits are crucial for early detection.
