WORLD BRAIN TUMOR DAY - Spread Awareness Save Lives

"Increasing Awareness for a Healthier Tomorrow"

Observed every year on June 8, World Brain Tumor Day is dedicated to honoring patients and families affected by brain tumors while promoting global awareness about this complex and often unpredictable disease. The day emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment, and continued support for those battling brain tumors.

What is a Brain Tumor?

A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within the brain or surrounding tissues. These cells multiply uncontrollably, forming a mass that can interfere with normal brain function.

Brain tumors may be:

  • Benign (non-cancerous): Usually slow-growing and less likely to spread.
  • Malignant (cancerous): More aggressive and capable of invading nearby brain tissue.

Types of Brain Tumors

1. Primary Brain Tumors

These originate within the brain itself. Common examples include:

  • Gliomas (Astrocytoma, Glioblastoma, Oligodendroglioma)
  • Meningiomas
  • Pituitary tumors
  • Medulloblastomas

2. Secondary (Metastatic) Brain Tumors

These occur when cancer cells from another part of the body—such as the lungs, breast, or skin (melanoma)—spread to the brain through the bloodstream.

Brain tumors are generally classified from Grade I to Grade IV, depending on how abnormal the cells appear, how rapidly they grow, and their potential to spread into nearby tissues.

Risk Factors

Although the exact cause of many brain tumors remains unknown, certain factors may increase risk:

  • Exposure to high-dose ionizing radiation
  • Certain inherited genetic conditions
  • Immune system disorders
  • Obesity and smoking
  • Cancer that has metastasized from another organ

Common Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on the tumor's size and location but may include:

  • Persistent or severe headaches
  • Unexplained nausea and vomiting
  • Sudden onset of seizures
  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Difficulty with balance or walking
  • Speech difficulties or memory problems

Any persistent neurological symptoms should be evaluated promptly by a healthcare professional.

Diagnostic Tests

Doctors may use one or more of the following investigations:

  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
  • CT Scan
  • PET-CT Scan (in selected cases)
  • Neurological examination
  • Lumbar puncture (spinal tap), when clinically appropriate
  • Biopsy
  • Blood tests and other supportive investigations

Treatment Options

Treatment depends on the type, grade, size, and location of the tumor and the patient's overall health. It may include:

  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy
  • Immunotherapy
  • Rehabilitation and supportive care

Some patients may also choose to explore complementary therapies, including Ayurveda, alongside standard medical treatment after consulting their healthcare team.

Ayurveda and Supportive Cancer Care

At D. S. Research Centre, patients with brain tumors may receive Ayurvedic supportive care, including personalized dietary guidance and traditional therapeutic approaches. Such complementary therapies are intended to support overall well-being and quality of life and should be undertaken in consultation with qualified healthcare professionals.

Current scientific evidence does not establish Ayurveda as a standalone cure for brain tumors. Patients are encouraged to follow evidence-based medical advice and discuss any complementary treatments with their treating physicians.

Spread Awareness, Save Lives

On this World Brain Tumor Day 2026, let us work together to educate communities about the warning signs of brain tumors and the importance of early diagnosis. Timely medical evaluation, appropriate treatment, and continuous support can make a significant difference in patient outcomes and quality of life.

"Increasing Awareness for a Healthier Tomorrow."

Because awareness today can help save lives tomorrow.
