The Grey Matters - Brain Tumour Awareness Month

June is the Brain Tumour Awareness month and 8th June is celebrated as the World Brain Tumour day every year. Brain tumour turns to be an emerging cause of cancer related mortality and morbidity these days. The current article is all about brain tumour and its presentation with the sign to be alert.

What does Brain do in human body?

- Body movement and maintenance of posture

-Direction of proper senses like eyesight, hearing etc

- Maintenance of our personal behaviour like memory, concentration, emotions

-The things we do without thinking like our act of breathing is also regulated by our brain

What is Brain Tumour

Brain tumour occurs due to the abnormal and excessive growth of brain tissues.

It is broadly divided into two types ie.Benign brain tumour and Malignant or cancerous brain tumour.

Malignant brain tumours may be Primary brain tumour or Secondary brain tumour depending upon their metastasis from other parts of body.

Neuroma, meningioma, chordoma etc. are the types of benign tumours and glioma, medulloblastoma etc. are the different categories of malignant brain tumour.






What are the symptoms/ Awareness regarding presentation of the disease?

Symptoms of brain tumour may vary depending upon tumour, size, type and location in the brain.

-Unexplained headache not resolving easily

-Changes/abnormalities in the vision, speech or hearing

-Balancing problem or difficulties in walking

-Problems with concentration, mood changes and alteration in the personality

-Sudden jerks or seizure in one part of body or face

-Numbness, weakness or tingling sensation in the hand, leg or face muscles

-Unexplained sleepiness or feeling drowsy




Causes of brain tumour

-Unknown cause

-Genetic cause

-Foetal developmental anomalies

-Electromagnetic or radiation hazards

-Previous history of Brain injury or trauma

-Physical Examination/Neurological examination and Medical history

-CT Scan

-MRI

-PET CT scan

-CSF analysis

-Biopsy
