Childhood Cancer Awareness Month: Gold September - A Time to Honor Brave Young Warriors

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, also known as Gold September, a time to honor the courage and resilience of children battling cancer. This global awareness initiative sheds light on the impact of childhood cancer, a disease that affects nearly 300,000 children worldwide every year. In India alone, around 50,000 new cases of childhood cancer are reported annually.

Most Common Childhood Cancers:

1. Leukemia and Lymphoma:- Leukaemia, the most common childhood cancer, affects the blood and bone marrow, leading to the production of abnormal blood cells.- Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, with two main types: Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, both impacting white blood cells.
2. Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors:These cancers originate in different parts of the brain or spinal cord and present symptoms such as frequent headaches, seizures, and vision problems.
3. Neuroblastoma:A cancer that forms in nerve tissue and primarily affects children under 5. Symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, and dark circles around the eyes.
4. Wilms Tumor (Nephroblastoma):This kidney cancer typically affects young children and presents with abdominal pain, high blood pressure, and blood in the urine.
5. Sarcoma:- Bone Sarcomas like Osteosarcoma and Ewing’s sarcoma affect growing bones, especially around the knees and arms.- Soft Tissue Sarcomas such as Rhabdomyosarcoma target muscles, while non-rhabdomyosarcoma sarcomas can occur in any soft tissue in the body.
