The lungs
are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest.
The main function of the lungs is the process of gaseous exchange known as respiration.
In respiration , oxygen from incoming air enters the blood , and carbon di
oxide, a waste gas from the metabolism leaves the blood.
Among various diseases of lungs the most fatal one is Lung Cancer. Every year, appx. 1.80 million people in the world died due to lung cancer. And in India, its very common among all cancers.
Avoiding
cancer risk factors may help prevent certain cancers. In case of Lungs, the
following risk factors must be avoided to prevent cancer-
1) Cigarette, Cigar and Pipe smoking—people
who smoke have about 20 times the risk of lung cancer compared to those who do
not smoke. Passive smokers are also exposed to same cancer causing agents as
smokers, although in smaller amounts.
2) Family History—having a family
history of lung cancer is also a risk factor for lung cancer.
3) HIV infection—being infected with the
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the cause of AIDS( acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome)is also linked with a higher risk of lung cancer.
4) Radiation exposure, workplace exposure
of asbestos, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, tar etc are also a risk factor for
lung cancer
5) Air Pollution—living in areas with
higher levels of air pollution increases the risk of lung cancer.
Regular exercise, taking healthy diet consists of fresh fruits, green vegetables, adequate sleep, avoiding all types of addiction will definitely lower the risk of lung cancer.
